Remembering the Robins gift
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dr. E. Bruce Heilman’s column, “The Unfolding of a Miracle,” which recounted the $50 million gift to UR from E. Claiborne Robins in 1969. I was there the night that the gift was announced, and Dr. Heilman’s description of the audience’s reaction was right on target: We were dumbstruck initially before bursting into cheers and applause. Dr. Heilman had just one detail incorrect: Commencement that year was Monday evening, June 9th, not in May as he stated. We were in what is now called Richmond’s Landmark Theatre but what was then known as The Mosque. It was a night I will never forget!
