‘Crazy things’

Fifty years later, Richmond’s Class of 1976 recounts its legendary pranks and campus exploits at a reunion filled with laughter, nostalgia, and gin and tonics.

“Fifty years ago, we did some pretty crazy things around here,” said Steve Akridge, B’76, co-chair of the reunion committee, from the podium at his class’s 50th anniversary cocktail reception.

Stories abounded. There was the time they brought The Bob Hope Show to campus for a fundraiser; an April Fools prank on Dean W. David Robbins — parking a car in the business school’s lobby; and their attempt to build a Guinness record-breaking submarine sandwich.

“I was the vegetable guy,” said Don Williams, B’76, as he recalled the sub’s assembly line. “I still have my chef’s hat that says ‘vegetable’ on it.”

Williams also brought mementos to the party: Adorning the welcome table was a copy of their commencement program and a perfectly yellowed 1974 print edition of The Collegian.

When asked the night’s most popular drink, one bartender answered with a smile: “Gin and tonics. This isn’t a white wine crowd. You can quote me on that.”
